Penalty brush-up sessions
Back in the saddle after a break? Step through each polo penalty, then check yourself with three quick questions.
Teaching sketch, not an official USPA diagram. The Umpire and the rulebook decide.
- Outdoor · Penalties 1 and 7: Penalty 1 awards one goal and restarts with a Penalty 5.b. Penalty 7 removes a player after a disabling foul. Neither has a field set-up.
- Outdoor · Penalty 2 · from the 30-yard line: Hit from the centre of the 30-yard line. The fouling team waits behind its back line, outside the goal, until the ball is hit or hit at.
- Outdoor · Penalty 2 · from the spot: Hit from where the foul happened. No fouling player within 30 yards of the ball, and all stay outside the goal until the ball is hit.
- Outdoor · Penalty 3 · undefended: Hit from the 40-yard line. The fouling team stays behind its back line and may not enter the field.
- Outdoor · Penalty 3 · defended: Hit from the 40-yard line. After the ball is in play the fouling team may enter the field, except between the goal posts.
- Outdoor · Penalty 4: Free hit from the 60-yard line. The fouling team must be behind the 30-yard line until the Umpire calls Play.
- Outdoor · Penalty 5.a · hit from the spot: Hit from where the ball was, at least 5 yards from boards and sidelines. Fouling team 30 yards clear and between the ball and the defended goal.
- Outdoor · Penalty 5.b · hit from centre of field: Hit from the centre of the field. Fouling team 30 yards clear and between the ball and the defended goal. Also the restart after a Penalty 1.
- Outdoor · Penalty 6 (Safety): After the ball goes over the end line, the hit is taken 60 yards out, level with where it crossed but no more than 40 yards from centre. Fouling team behind the 30-yard line.
- Arena · Penalty 1: A foul near the goal that stops a likely goal. The fouled team is awarded one or two goals, then a Penalty 5.b centre hit.
- Arena · Penalty 2 · from 15 yards: Free hit from 15 yards in front of the goal. All players behind the hit point except one fouling player on the end wall, at least 10 yards from the goal edge.
- Arena · Penalty 2 · inside the 15-yard line: If fouled inside the 15-yard line, the team may hit from the spot. Then everyone else is behind the 15-yard line, and the designated fouling player is on the opposite side of the goal.
- Arena · Penalty 3 · from 25 yards: Free hit from 25 yards in front of the goal. Same set-up as Penalty 2: everyone behind the hit point except one fouling player on the end wall.
- Arena · Penalty 4 · from 25 yards: Free hit from 25 yards. One fouling player may stand within the 5-yard arc of the goal and may block.
- Arena · Penalty 5.a · hit from the infraction: Free hit from the point of the infraction (25 yards or more from the goal attacked). Fouling team at least 5 yards from the ball. Nobody lines up in the Right of Way inside 16 yards.
- Arena · Penalty 5.b · hit from the centre: Free hit from the centre of the arena. Fouling team at least 5 yards from the ball. Nobody lines up in the Right of Way inside 16 yards.
