How does the polo handicap matrix work?
The handicap matrix converts the difference between the two teams' total handicaps into the goals awarded to the lower-handicap team. Outdoors the allowance is the difference multiplied by the number of chukkers and divided by 6. In the arena the matrix scales the difference to a 30-minute regulation game, so four 7½-minute periods award the full difference.
Applies to: outdoor and arena polo.
The arena matrix treats two 7½-minute periods (or three 5-minute periods) as half the difference, and four 7½-minute periods (or six 5-minute periods) as the full difference.
Fractional allowances count as half a goal. Overtime periods are not counted in the outdoor calculation.
